STRUCK BY TRAMCAR.
MAN FATALLY INJURED.
EVIDENCE AT 'INQUEST,
A verdict of accidental death was returned by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner, at tho adjourned inquest yesterday concerning the death of Nelson Gordon Morrison, aged 34, who was knocked down by a tramcar in Queen Street on September 12. Deceased died at the Auckland Hospital on the following day.
Norman S. Drew, tramway motorman, said that at the time of the accident, 4,50 p.m., ho was driving down Queen Street at an estimated speed of eight miles an hour. Pedestrians were frequently crossing in front of the tramcar. When passing the Victoria Street intersection witness' attention was drawn to a number of people standing in the six feet way between tho two sets of rail*. A train on tho outward track was aborst to start and as several of the waiting people were undecided to cross or stay, witness sounded his gong and gave warning of approach. As soon as they were clear witness glanced to the left ond saw deceased about two feet from tho rail nearest tho kerb and about two or three feet from tho .tramcar. He was looking away from the car and although the gong was sounded and tho emergency brake applied immediately the man was struck and knocked down. Witness was quite satisfied that he had dono all in his power to avoid an accident.' Similar evidence was given by the conductor on the tramcar and two eyewitnesses of tho accident.
In returning a verdict that (he do ceased died from injuries received through being knocked down by a tramcar, the toionor said there was no evidence to incheato tnat tho tramway men wero in any way negligent.
