OWNERS' EXPENDITURE.
COMPARISON WITH STAKES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] WELLINGTON, Thursday. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Wellington Trotting' Club the president, Mr. R. : A'. Armstrong, drew attention to the large contribution to the upkeep;of the sport made by the owners of trotting horses during last season.- ■ . . , In round figures there were some 1400 different horses competing and at a conservative estimate this represented a maintenance cost ■to owners for the season of £360,000. This estimate made no allowance for the capital value of : the animals : and left out entirely a large number of horses not actually competing who were either in training or being otherwise maintained. The net amount returned to owners in stakes .was, in round figures,' £173,000, including several benefit meetings. •It would'- _bp-"'seen that owners, as a whole,-in' the-tipkeep of •those horses actually competing, tributed over twice the amount thai " was available as a return by waj* y .of stakes. It was necessary that these-' facts should be made public, as there 'Was an .impression abroad, unfortunately" fostered by' Home officials, thai ownets had all the' best of it. NEW BRIGHTON MEETING. EXCELLENT NOMINATIONS^ [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday If the New* Brighton Trotting Club does not make a proiit out of its meeting on September G it will not have the owners to blame, for generally 1 the nominations are numerous. The two slow-class''faces that open the programme:' have v drawn exceptionally big nominations, the Improvers' Handicap having drawn 82, while 38 .will bo handicapped for the Belfast,- Handicap. The , smallest field of the day is -likely: to bo in the Electric Handicap,' , of a mile in saddle, for which only 15 nominations have been received. Admiral Bingen has not so 'far - bhbwn any great liking for a two miles journey, although he has proved a brilliant j performer up to a mile and a-half. He has been accorded a .nomination in the Burwood Handicap, of two miles, limit 4.40, at the New Brighton meeting.
