TURF IN AUSTRALIA.

NEW, ZEALAND ERS' DOINGS.

SUCCESS GF IN THE SHADE.

LIMERICK'S GOOD TRACK FORM

SYDNEY, Aug.' 7.

A' boisterous* ahd cold westerly wind greeted patrons of the A.J.C. "Warwick Farm Meeting, which' ushered' in the new season on Saturday, but several close and exciting finishes, compensated for this discomfort.

The chief interest, to New? Zealariders, was the success of In' The Shade in the "Warwick August Handicap, li miles. * Scratchings reduced tho field to six, of which In The Shade, the ex-New Zealand mare .Becalmed, and imported Dark Isle were most in demand in' tho betting ring.

Dark Isle set off at a fast clip in an attempt to win from end to end, and quickly had tho small field well strung out. Bagby was Content to let In The Shade get properly balanced before sending him after the leaders, and ho was going easily in third place early, several lengths back. However, when Bagby moved on him three furlongs from home In The, Shade quickly closed the gap and was within striking distance behind Dark Isle and Lord Romeo as they turned into the straight. The isaue was Boon beyond doubt, as In The Shade ran past the other two half-way down the running, and without being extended beat Becalmed, who finished well, by a length and a-half, with Lord Romeo a head aWay, and Dark Me, who tired badly, a poor, fourth. In The Shade's victory.,was heartening to his supporters in the Metrppolitan Handicap, but the horses he beat were poor class, although ho ,'carried his impost? of Bst. 4lb. without effort to win. convincingly, whereas he has 'only Bst. Sib. in the big raco at R&ndwick. He .is ..very firm in the betting on the A.J.C. spring event, but will have to make further improvement yet to hold ■ his placo anion's the first fancies.

' , •? Safrgon and Eaglet. ■ £ Sargon was' accorded 'public support in tho; fir?t "division of the; Maiden; Three-year-old Handicap,. 7 furlongs, won by Talkie. Sargon'did" not get a good passage in. the straight; and-'finished-fourth. He looks like being .better;suited over a distance. Stately was a warm favourite for. the Farm Stakes, 1 mile, but she again left her supporters .lamenting.' Golden Speech was the winner. Stately was with the leaders to lha 6traight, but dropped back, to finish -fourth. Eaglet, had her first outing in the sprint event, the Denhara Court Handicap, and was running on at the head of the bunch behind the leading division at the finish. She will be in good trim for a longer-dis-tance event soon.

A. D. Webster's Huntique was supported 1 for the second division of the Maiden Three-year-old Handicap, but drew a bad marble and could not get round the field. B,e was running on in fourth place at the finish. He is not mtich to look at, but has fair liaoe. ...

'Teremoana, who won the Ma,itland Cup, Imile-, 3 .furlongs; last year, was second to Mabel Yetman in this. year's, race on Saturday. Ho was beaten by one and a-half lengths. Beware, second last ye#r<- occupied third place.

• Kidaides is to make another trip to Sydney this month. T. O'Dea contemplate!! bringing Income with him also from South Australia. -;

At the Kensington pony races on Saturday the stewards _ held an inquiry into the running of Wollera in, the third division of 'the Encourage Stakes, in which she finished third. \As- » result •' B.' Kennedy, ownertrainer, and} the. mare were disqualified for six months, and the jockey, G. Guinane, was suspended for a . similar period.

Running at Moorfleld. • New Zealand horses figured prominently in the Sellers' Handicap, 6 furlongs, at Moorefield' on "Monday., Mr.. E. It. Kiddiford's Greehmantle was having his first run since ho dead-heated with Bludale at Rosehill, and Mr. J. Paterson's Full Measure and Mr. "W. G. Stead's "Whelk were also in the field. Whelk was strongly supported to second favouritism and the other two. were also in good demand. However, Psalmist, who had disappointed his connections more thaw once, jumped away smartly and gave nothing else a. chance. . "Whelk was running second along the back, but, as at Canterbury, he weakened into sixth pldce. Full Measure finished on well into eecond place, three lengths from tbß winner, while Greerunantle was fourth. The pace set by Psalmist, who is a, three-year-old Cistercian colt, completely upset the field.

•Mithra was rushed as a good thing in a field of six which contested the Bank Holiday Handicap at Moorefield, and .punters eagerly, accepted the very short odds offered. Probably the fact that Mithra had finished ahead of In The Shade in a 6pin over a mile at Randwick on Thursday last, and the latter'a subsequent victory at Warwick "Farm, AVere .the reasons for the heavy public support. • However, Voitre had her well back on the rails until the back stretch, where lie persistently endeavoured to get through and §tfu'ck a lot- of -trouble. He was forced Ho ■ease hia mount, fall back and endeavour finally to' come round the field, which was .then well bunched.

The consistent Flinders liad the field at his mercy before the straight was reached and won f-asily by four lengths. Mithra finished a poor fifth. She will need to show great improvement before the public supports her again in such confident manner. Voitre waa subsequently censured by the stewards for attempting to get' up where there was no room. - ■; • •' : ■ Hard Words was produced;in' the first division of the. Staff . Welter at'Moorefield, and although unbacked made play with the hot favourite, Prince Verderer,. .to the straight, where both quickly faded .oat. Next time Jamieson saddles him up ho will not lack publio support. "The ruji should do him a lot of good, as he paraded in nice trim. Interest in Limerick. Limerick has jumped right into the limelight jyraiii with .his Bmart sprints , siiace arriving at Randwick. On Saturday morning he .showed' hw old dash' by running five furlongs on the' grass in 1.51, and following steady work on Tuesday with a halfmile sprint in 555, ho was senfc against tho watch this morning. Carrying a light boy he accounted for six furlongs in the smart time of 1.17 J. Paquito assisted him over the -last five in 1.45. The old champion revelled in his task arid pulled up, well. F. D'. Jones was very pleased with the performance.

Other members of Jones' team are going really. well on--tho track, First Sight impressing watchers with his bold stylo of galloping. First Sight has come prominently into calculations this week for to Epsom Handicap. On Tuoadav ho was coupled with his stable-mate Paquito and also Glare for the big spring doub a to J"" substantial amounts, and on y a shorten ng of odds prevented further business bang Thidfia gradually getting into shape for hia tnning-up process. „At Randwack on SfSr Tuesday I >F r "nfaTl^te^ t ftl'e gist whil took £ai? He was accompanied by Yambacoona. The same pair were together for a mile 1 60 without effort this morning, when times were slow:' Chide looks very well at present, and bliows no aigii of tho uhoulder soreness whioh accounted for his.-absence in tho aW M Um MoCarteh has begun tho n^.sf^ 01 ) well He rode the winner of tho first Hat race at Warwick Farm and was narrowly beaten in tho bag epnnt. Ho followed this up by riding two good winners at Moorefield on Monday. His success on Exact in the Commercial Stakes, 1 mile, was very cratifvinu to the owner-trainer, J. a. Scully, who haa had a difficult task to get the Shillinglee mare 1o do her best in races. McCarten brought her along m the straight to win nicely from Golden Speech, on which ho was successful at Warwick Farm. In tho second division of the Htatf Welter Handicap Ivebate (McCarten) gave Scully his second win for the day. It was another convincing victory for tho naar.
