AUTOMATIC TELEPHONES.
NEW LINK IN OPERATION.
NORTHCOTE AND BIRKENHEAD.
Automatic telephones connected direct with the Auckland metropolitan system are now in operation at Northcote and Birkenhead, about 50 applications having so far been dealt with. There is no sep arate automatic exchange, but all subscribers' lines run under the harbour to the Ponsonby exchange through a cabl* containing 300 pairs of wires. The cable was laid some time ago from tho foot of Curran Street, Ponsonby, to a point near the Northcote and Birkenhead Gas Company's works, which, are situated about midway between the two ferry wharves. It is of a capacity that, should meet all needs for some years to come. The Auckland basic rate is charged to all subscribers who live within a boundary which includes the most thickly settled areas of both boroughs. The Birkenhead manual exchange, which also serves Northcote,. has been retained, and is likely to remain in use for some time by subscribers who prefer to pay the lower rates—£6 per annum for a residence and £8 for a business —charged for the limited service .it provides. The metropolitan rates are £8 10s and £ls per annum respectively. Before tho automatic telephones were introduced the exchange had approximately 70 subscribers.
