WAGES ON TRAWLERS.
OWNERS AND MEN DISAGREE. COURT ASKED TO DECIDE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Monday. The hearing uf the dispute between the New Zealand Seamen's Union and Xew Zealand fisheries, Ltd., was resumed by the Arbitration Court to-day. The case was partly heard at the last sittings of the Court, when the dispute was referred back to the parties, to see if an agreement could be reached. Mr. F. P. Walsh appeared for the union and Mr. T, 0. Bishop for the employers. Mr. Walsh said the dispute affected the workers employed on the trawlers Futurist and Nora Niven. He contended that the conditions on the Wellington trawlers and the Auckland trawlers were entirely different. Several conferences had been held and ultimately all the clauses in dispute were agreed to, with the exception of those relating to wAges and the discharge of ashes, which had been referi-pd to the Court by the Conciliation Council. The conditions of work on the trawlers wore described and a claim was mads for an increase of wages. Mr. Bishop opposed the demand fcr an lincrease in wages. He said the lo'vestpaid man on the trawlers earned £282 a year and the highest £317, which he contended was adequate remuneration in such an industry. The Court reserved its decision.
