iftICCAETON TREBLE. HATIONALS AND WINTER CUP. OMEO fancied for steeples. RING'S JEST IN THE HURDLES. rfl, o ri nst few days have brought forth (resET developments in connection with (he Grand National Steeplechase, the (/-and National Hurdles and the Winter Cup " 10 l eai ' in S CVCIlts to % decided nt j)j 0 Caat er ' nn '. v Jockey Club's Grand National Meeting at Riecnrton on August jo J4 and 16, and the position is much the same as when the acceptances were junounccd Inst/week. for the Grand National Steeplechase ()meO is the ruling favourite and bis riming in" tlio Awapuni Steeplechase tomorrow is sure to bo followed with conliderable interest. If lie gets through that engagement in a manner that satisfy his admirers, Onico will probably then come into even greater favour. Other horses whose names are mentioned in the discussions include Aurora Borealis, Wharncliffe and Lord Ranald. As far ss Lord Ranald is concerned most of his admirers will be prepared to wait until he races in the llomehy Steeplechase it tho Christchurch Hunt Meeting on Saturday. There are indications, bowever, that he is well fancied in certain quarters. In spite of bis defeat at Treutham Kind's Jest is a definite favourite for the Grand National Hurdles and it is evident that many expect him to improve t pon his Winter Hurdles effort at Riccarton. King's Jest is reported to be doing well in his preparation, and Lancer, mother strong fancy, is doing likewise. When practically a beginner at the hurdling business Lancer ran a good third last year and he is confidently expected io improve upon that performance this year. One of Lancer's best assets is his staying ability, and under a bandy weight liko 9.11 he seems certain to make a bold {bowing. Outside King's Jest and Lancer, the most popular candidates appear to be Mangani, Aurora Borealis and Omeo,.but, as they arc all engaged in the Steeplechase, which is run on the first day, they may be more fancied for the cross-country race, for the time being at least. In the discussions on the Winter Cup popular fancy seems to incline toward Havering and Staghuuter, who were winters. at the recent winter meeting at Tientham. Staghuuter is a horse who may be susceptible to a good deal of improvement and he is favourably placed to make a bold bid for victory, as he is not unduly burdened with 9.12. Moreover, it is in his favour that he possesses the brilliancy to get a cowl position early, •which is invaluable in a race of this description. Tc.Venma, Black Duke and Full .Feather are others whose names are frequently mentioned, but there are a host o? others who may enter into calculations is "tho day of the race approaches.
