FRUIT RESEARCH WORK.
INVESTIGATION AT NELSON. GRANT BY GOVERNMENT. [BY T ELECT. AFII. —I'IIESS ASSOCIATION. ] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. The Government has decided to make provision for a definite scheme of fruit research. Cabinet recently approved of a grant which, with assistance from the Fruit Export Control Board and the Empire Marketing Board, will enable an orchard property of 72 acres near Nelson to bo acquired, tho area to be invested in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
Tho Horticultural Division of the Agricultural Department arid the Cawthron Institute will now be able to couduct and extend their field investigations in cooperation in the centre of an important fruit-growing area. Tho orchard will also be available for the instruction both of tho officers of tho Horticulture Division and fruitgrowers. Tho Marketing Board has made a grant of £ISOO for the actual maintenance of research work for five years, and this will bo subsidised on a pound for pound basis by the Government. Tho Fruit Research Committee has already prepared a scheme of investigation. The cool storago investigations of the Cawthron Institute and tho Fruit Research Committee on vessels is also to be extended in co-operation with the Cambridge low-tcmperaturo research station. The necessary scientific assistance to fruitgrowers to enable them to overcome insect and other pests, to use manures and to train them in general orchard management will bo provided.
