FUTURE OF KAURI FOREST.
TIMBER AT KATIKATI.
PROPOSAL BY GOVERNMENT.

In regard to the kauri forest at Katikati, the Commissioner of State Forests has advised Mr. C. E. Macrnillan, M.P., that instructions have already been given to" the conservator of forests fo carry out the appraisal of tho forest and as soon as possible after appraisal the timber will bo offered for sale by public competition in accordance with the forest policy. Regarding the reservation of a particularly fine kauri free, the commissioner says that tire ollicer making the appraisal has been instructed to look into the matter on the ground with a ■view to making a suitable reservation. Mr. Macrnillan, in tho interests of the workers in the district, has asked tho Commissioner of State Forests to recommend the Minister of Public Works to give preference in the sale to any miller prepared to erect a mill and cut the timber in the district.
