ISOLATED SITUATION. DANGER IN TIME OF WAR, (Received July 24, 10.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 24. In the course of a report to the Federal Government by General Sir Harry Chauvel coincident with his retirement from the position of Chief of the General Military Staff, lie says: "Australia is the most isolated and sparsely-populated portion of the Empire and therefore occupies a position of very great danger in time of war." Sir Harry says ho considers a revision of Australia's defenco policy urgent, and adds: "It is obvious that the provision of adequate naval forces is beyond the financial capacity of Australia, but she is so dependent on sea defence that it is equally obvious that she should contribute what bhe can toward it, having in view her primary responsibility for providing necessary land and nir forces for her local defences."
