Interest has been aroused by an announcement that Mr. Edward Harkness, an American railway magnate of Scottish descent, proposes to devote a large sum of money to educational and social work in Britain. The amount Mr. Harkness will spend in this way is understood in Parliamentary circles to be at least £2,000,000. Tho Leader of the Conservatives, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, possibly will be a member of the committee which is to recommend outlets for the fund. However, nothing is likely to be decided hastily.

GENEROUS RAJAH. DISPOSAL OF £IOO,OOO. CIVIL SERVANTS' CHILDREN. (Received July 24, 5.35 p.m.) British Wireless. RUGBY, July 23. The Rajah of Sarawak has decided that the unallocated balance, amounting to £25,000, of his gift of £IOO,OOO to the British Government shall be offered to the Imperial Forestry Institute. The main portion of tho gift is to bo used as a fund t.o assist in the education of children of colonial civil servants.
