AN APPARENT HOAX.

NOTE FOUND ON STEAMER. ALLEGED LAST MESSAGE. [BY TELEGKAW.—PKESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. On tho arrival of tho forry steamer Maori at LyHelton yesterday the chief oflicer picked up a wallet behind a deck ventilator. Tho wallet contained a note: "Jumped overboard last night," and also a number of accounts addressed to a resident of New Plymouth. The chief steward of the Maori reported that there was no man of the name mentioned on the accounts on board on Tuesday night. No inquiries have been received regarding the person supposed to bo missing. The police have the matter in hand, but believe it to be a hoax.
