BULLFIGHTS BANNED.

disregarded plea

" IIUMANE AND ' HARMLESS."

]n consequence of the disturbances which took place recently in the little French town of Melun, on the edge of the forest of "Fontaineblcau, the Prefect of the Department decided that two bulllights announced would be forbidden. The, Mayor of the town and. the local deputies called at. the Ministry of the Interior and tried to get the ban removed. They argued that tho lights which had been organised in aid of the School Children's Holiday Fund were merely spectacular representations, and were quite humane and harmless, for neither bull nor horse were killed or even hurt, and consequently no law was broken. However, as the protests of members of the French Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were repressed in a. very high-handed manner by the police ami several people were roughly handled, including the well-known novelist, Mdme. llaphilde. it' was decided not to allow any further performances.
