DOMINION ROAD TRAMS.
" A FLOATING SECTION."
PETITION TO THE BOARD.
A petition signed by 1721 residents of tho southern portions of Mount Eden and Mount Roskill was presented to the Transport Board yesterday asking for the institution of a " floating tram section at Balmoral, on the Dominion Road tram line*. This would enablo pcoplo residing near the now terminus to travel b\ liani to tho shopping centre at Balmoral for 2d instead of 3d. The last section on tho Dominion Road lino starts at ITalston Road, lo chains beyond tho Balmoral shopping centre, which used to be the tram terminus before the line was extended. Tho suggestion made by tho petitioners is that these 15 chains should be regarded as a "floating section," so that passengers travelling from tho terminus can alight at Balmoral for a 2d fare, while passengers from the city can still regard TTn Ist on Road as t lie end of the third section from town. " Ib is not intended to interfere with tho present stopping places," stated (ha petition. " Balmoral is the main and only commercial and shopping centre for Mount Eden south and the southern portion of Mount Roskill, and the tram section stop at Halston Road, which compels tho public to enter or alight there, is not convenient, in that it is isolated, open to the elements and has not any of the usual amenities that aro applicablo to a tram section."
Mr. L. A. Tozer and Mr. W. S. Dingle addressed the hoard in support of the petition. Mr. Dingle expressed the viewthat (he suggested alteration would encourage people to shop at Balmoral instead of in tho citv.
