RACING.

M GRAND NATIONALS.

STEEPLECHASE prospects,

strong held in hurdles.

WINTER CUP PROBLEM.

/Wliea tho acceptances for tho leading events at tho Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National Meeting, which will be held on August 12, 14 and 16, fell duo last Friday 15 horses were left in tho Grand National Steeplechase, 21 in tho Grand National Hurdles and 30 in tho tVinter Cup.. The Grand National Steeplechase bears a very open aspect at this stage an d'there'is no doubt that tho winner is well concealed. As a result of good form through the winter Aurora Borealis, Jfangani and Omeo are assured of strong following®, but tney are all well u p in tho weights and will not, find it «sisv over tho difficult country. Nnkumai has not shone as a steeplocfiaser and will have to improve greatly on his latest form to win. Snowfall is a fine jumper who should bo in his element over big fences at Riccavton. Tho same applies to Lord Ranald, but thero is a doubt whether lie will bo ready. Matu has received his full share of weight, but ] iU was second last year and might r.gain show up this time, for his ability to handle tho course will bo in his favour. Of the lightweights Radiate, Hymestrason, Wharncliffo and Kapuna may bo as likely as any, especially Wharncliffo, one of the best stayers in tho field, who has lately shown signs of returning to form. 3]any will find it difficult to form definite opinions' just at present, but the early selections may includo Omoo, Wharncliffo and Aurora Borealis. The Hurdles Candidates.

j The Grand National Hurdles will be dwided on the second day of tho meetjt'T and it may provo one of the most interesting contests for years, as Dvero 13 an abundance of useful material. Luck has been against the top-weight, Mister Gamp, this season, but this may be his opportunity to regain the limelight. Fit and well ho would probably account for all those weighted above 10st., although improvers liko King's Jost and Carinthia may givo considerable trouble, and Mangani may also be troublesome in spito of tho fact that ho has over a stono moro than ho won with bit year.

Lancer, Fine Acre and Abcrfeldy sre likely horses with handy weights and there is a disposition among southerners to favour Lancer, who finished third last year, when ho was not as well seasoned as he is now. Aurora Borealis and Omeo aro two of the best stayers in the race and must be respected on that acconnt, although the fact that they will tacldo tho steeplechase first may lie considered to detract slightly from tiicir prospects. There are a number of possibilities among tho light-weights, and the best of these may be Llyn Dhu, Anache, Perlo do Leon, Mountain Guide antf Amorist.

vThe final. work of the candidates fiiay causo a revision of present ideas, but it is probable that there will lo demand for Lancer, King's Jest and Mister Gamp. Winter Cup Field. The Winter Gup presents a very difficult problem and early fancies are sure to take a wide range. The history of the race is against the top-weights, only eight horses carrying over lOst. having won in 31 years, so that it i> likely that many will endeavour to select the winner from tho division between lCst and Osfc. This year, however, the horses at tho'top of the weights ate a good lot and their chances cannot bo lightly • passed by. Tho topweight, Toxeuma, is one of the best "tilers in tho Dominion and, though ho Vvill have to establish a weight-carrying record to win, he will only have to bo produced fit to make a bold bid for victory. Silver Paper, Ilavering, and Black Duke are also good, and Full Feather is partial to the mile course at Riccarton.

Taboo and Ten are capable milers, but cf those near the lOst. mark none mukes more appeal than Otairi and Stagter. Best Friend and Pride are afso likely horses, while other lightweight possibilities arc Tourist, Duellona, Danelagh, Limosin and Hounslow. Somo *'ho may be in demand early are Stagnter, Otairi and Toxeuma.
