EIGHTIETH ANNIVERSARY#

The Loyal Good Intent Lodge, M.U. 1.0.0. F., celebrated its 80th birthday last week with a reunion of members in the Hobson Street Hall. Over MO membors gathered with their friends and wives. A number had not attended any lodge meeting for some time owing to the infirmities of age, and many boasted of over" 50 years' membership. Some ol' the younger members placed their motor-cars at the disposal of their aged brethren, who were thus enabled to attend. A very cordial welcome was extended by the N.G., Bro. Bergman, who expressed his pleasure at the largo attendance and his gratification at being N.G. of so successful a lodge which, eighty years ago, started with 17 members and now had a roll 'number of

nearly 800. The district secretary, Bro. J. McLcod, gave a very interesting account of the lodge's history, and traced its various meeting places from its inception to the present clay. The grand master of the Auckland District, Bro. W. Pitcher, also gave a short address arid eulogised

tli© splendid services of that hardy band of pioneer workers who, in sj>ito of difficulties, laid the foundations of the lodge so truly and so well. Ho then spoke of thoso who had carried on the good work and specially referred to the labours of the secretary, Bro. W. Dean, to whose services much of the present prosperity of the lodge is due, A splendid programme was presented by the Lyric Quartette, supported by items from Miss P. E. McLeod, Miss Audrey Perry, and Mrs. A. Ripley. Mr. Ivan Lambert officiated at. the piano. Supper, followed by a. danco, brought to a close one of the most enjoyable evenings ever held by this old-established lodge. Credit must be given to the .social committee in whose hands the arrangements for the function were placed.

The Auckland Transport. Club held a very successful dance in Scots Hall last Wednesday. Nearly 250 couples danced to the music of Morrow's Orchestra, and tho evening passed all too quickly. For those who preferred the less strenuous pastimes, euclire and 500 were played in tho ante The lady's" euchre prize was won by Mrs. Belcher, and the gentleman's bv Mr. «T. Brander. Tho 500 prize was won by Mrs. Dale and Mr. F. Thomas. Tho gathering was served with supper.

The Waitemata Lodge, U.A.0.D., met last week in the Benall Street Hall, Ponsonby. In the absence of the A.D., Bro. Guy, P.A. Bro. W. Gwyer presided. The attendance was good, visitors being present from Auckland, Ponsonby and Grey Lynn Lodges. The district president. Bro. S. Fisher, paid an official visit and during the evening installed Bro. J. Findlay into the position of outside guardian, in glace of Bro. Forsythe, whose resignation through removal was received with much regret. With deep sorrow the brethren learned of the loss sustained by Bro. W. Evans, in the death of his wife. A vote of sympathy with Bro. Evans was carried, the members standing in silence. Much discussion centred around the proposed increase in fees by the Hospital Board. It. was unanimously agreed that the members could not possibly bear the burden of the proposed increases and the lodge delegates to the Hospital Fund were so informed. At the conclusion of business the members were served with supper. Humorous items and some dancing exhibitions were much enjoyed. Bro. W. Forsvthe officiated at the piano.

The quarterly meeting of (he .Alexandra Lodge, No. 53, Protestant Alliance Friendly Society, was held in the Orange Hall, Newton Road, last week. The bal-ance-sheet showed the funds to be in a satisfactory condition. This lodge is pursuing its way quietly but steadily, and much good work is being accomplished. Tho members of the lodge look forward with much confidence to tho future.

The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Papatoetoe Lodge, M.U. 1.0.0. F., took place last week in the Renown Hall, the N.G., Bro. Macauley presiding over about 50 members. The formal business was quickly dealt with, after which an amusing time was spent in humorous debates. The subjects chosen were: "What is Wrong with Puhinui?" "Talkies versus Silent Pictures," "Town versus Country," and "Men's Fashions versus Women's Fashions." All the officerg. took part and many amusing views were expounded. The serving of supper brought a very enjoyable evening 1o- a close.

A meeting of the Auckland Lodge, No. 2, U.A.0.D., was held in the Druids' Hall, North Street, last week. The A.D., Sister Lovvry, presided over a large attendance, which included visitors from Devonport, Waitemata and Grey Lynn lodges. During the evening one new member received initiation into the mystic rites of Druidism, in a manner that reflected great credit upon the officers. Four candidates were proposed for membership. The business was concluded with despatch and the lodge wont into harmony, a 500 tournament being the chief attraction. The prizes, presented by Bro. Potter, P.A., were won by Sister Knight and Bro. Find lay. The sisters of the lodge provided supper.

The Gordon Tent. T.0.R., met at Onehunga last week, under the leadership of the A.D., T3ro. Millbanks. The attendance was good and all the officers were in their places. The book steward, I3ro. Ferguson, received installation into his office at the hands of P.C.R., Bro. German. A number of reports were given and final arrangements were made for the anniversary social next lodge night, when a good attendance of visitors is expected. When the routine business had been transacted the members spent a pleasant time together with indoor bowls and table tennis.
