NOTES ON THE RACING.

SURPRISE BY DEPORTMENT.

A SENSATIONAL DIVIDEND.

SEVEN TICKETS ON WINNER. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COB RESPONDENT.] "VV AIM ATE, Saturday. There was a big surpriso in the opening event, the Bluecliffs Hunters' Steeplechase, at the Wuimatc Ilunt meeting to-day. Tho winner, Deportment, carried only seven tickets and returned nearly three-parts of a century, tho largest dividend paid in the South Island for some years. The favourite. Rod Heather, made play for a round but then retired. Deportment and Tractarian, racing abreast, had a big break on tho field for tho remainder of the journey. Deportment finishing on hotter than Tractarian \o win by a neck. Gold Town was 20 lengths away third, tho others to finish being Willow Glen, lied Heather, Monks and West Domo. Troilus was sent out favourite for tho Studholme Hurdles Handicap but at a surprisingly good iirice. Troilus took charge from Membo going out of tho straight tho first time, and, although Menibo kept him up to his task, he was always a winner to have a length's advantage from his novice rival at tho post. Exide was three lengths away, in front of Gay Fashion, with Oriflamb the Inst of tho five starters. Bracket Second and Third. Tho Solmuri—Royal Limon bracket carried most money in tho Waihao Hack Handicap, and. their supporters had to bo content with a small second dividend. The race was a fairly easy proposition for Valuator, who, with Solmuri and Dry Area, got the best of a snap start. Dry Area rushed to the front at tho end of a furlong and soon opened up a big gup from Valuator. However, Valuator collared him at the straight entrance and went on to win comfortably by two lengths from ltoynl Limond, who got badly away and bad too much ground to make up. Solmuri was a length back, clear of Miss Marco and Dry Area. Snowy Iluon was installed a short-priced favourilo for tho Winter Trot Handicap in saddle, and, ridden a confident race by his owner-trainer, R. Townley, scored a decisive victory. Ho went to tho front shortly after the start but allowed Great Scott to head him going along the back. Great Scott was first into the straight from Snowy Iluon and Mary Locanda, but in tho run homo Snowy Huon gradually forged ahead and, without being ridden out, beat Great Scott by lialf-a-length. Mary Locanda was three lengths away third, with Norwester next. Cup Steeplechase Contest. The fact that Barrington was reserved for tho Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase prompted investors to go strongly for him and ho finished up a much better favourite than the Southlunder Ngahue. The pair paid the dividends. Ngahue was tho early lender but was supplanted by Harrington at the end of half-a-mile. Barrington entered tho final circuit in front of Ngahue and Marco Polo, with lied Heather and Rangatahi next. Ngahuo and Marco I'olo ran up to Barrington along the back but tho move was short-lived, as Barrington outjumped them for the remainder of the journey, and, although challenged by Ngahue in the run home, gained a popular victory by a littlo over a length. Marco Polo struggled on into third place six lengths away, and then came at intervals Ited Heather, liangatahi and Nightraid. Scion ran off at the second fence and in continuing tho journey fell at tho second of the stand double. Ace Pot fell in tho second circuit and Faloose ran off.

11l spite of the fact that only three acceptors paraded for the Morven Handicap ■an interesting tussle wus staged, resulting in a narrow victory for the outsider Arrowmir. First Raid was first away but Arrowmir quickly shot to the front and led to the home turn, with Fair Money and First Raid close up. Fair Money was in trouble commencing the run home, and I'jrf t Raid tackled Arrowmir. In a sustained finish Arrowmir hung on to win by a neck, with Fair Money three lengths away. Hunters' Plate to Coramentor.

The Winton-trained AVest Dome, makiug liis second appearance, was voted (ho best proposition in the Hunters' Piute but was well beaten into second place. Commontor took charge after traversing half-a-milo and led along the back and round tho itr turn from All Comment and West Dome. Coinmentor was never in danger of defeat from this onwards, and ran homo an easy winner by three lengths. In an exciting tussle for second honours West Dome secured the verdict by a neck from All Comment. Donatio was a bad fourth, with Laughio next. Town Major, with a Mb. allowance, was produced in the Waimato Hack Handicap ond was sent out tho shortest-priced favourite of tho day. Ho got away well, but was squeezed back going into the back stretch and again nfc tho half-mile when endeavouring to regain liis position, with the result that he was a long way in tho rear of tho field with three furlongs to go. Ho made a forward move rounding tho home turn, but when Solmuri and Night Effort were well clear of him entering tho straight liis prospects did not look at all bright. However, ho unwound a remarkable run over tho final stages, and in a stirring finish collared Night Effort a few yards from the post and beat her by a length. Miss Marco was three lengths away third, in front of Solmuri and Crossbow.
