ELLERSLIE GALLOPS. RISING TWO-YEAR-OLDS. NO TIME-MAKING ATTEMPTED. For the time of the year the tracks at Ellerslie could scarcely have been in better order than they were on Saturday, when the No. 3 grass was available, and many trainers took advantage of tho favourable conditions to indulge their horses in short Hprints. No time-making was attempted, but several lior3es registered fair times over short courses and several rising two-year-olds who were allowed to nm along went slightly worse than 13s to the furlong. Details of the work arc;— No. 3 CRASS. W. Gall's pair, Grand Spirit and Lusoma, covered four furlongs in 53s without being bustled. Grand Spirit is making good progress and should be decidedly useful next, season. Land Measure, Foot Rule and Trace wero indulged in a short sprint up the straight, while tho Top-Gallant—Princes 3 Ilona colt and the Romeo—Norval Tea gelding were allotted a similar task. Great Emblem and Informant, a rising two-year-old by Lapidary in F. Gilchrist's stable, reeled off three furlongs in 42 1-Gs, Stimulant easily running tho samo distance in 43a. Patutahi placed four furlongs behind in 54a, his stable-mates Neil and Brampton going easily over tho samo ground in 5Gs. Subeditor ran tlireo furlongs in 425, and Sir Archie improved on that effort by registering 40 l-ss. Thunderstorm and Milvane were associated over four furlongs in 545, Wild Country and Manawhenua running tho samo distance in 52 2-ss. Tho rising two-year-olds, Bonny Lea (Arausio —Waterlea), Hawthorn (Lucullus— Little Flower), and United (Acre—Lucona) were allowed fo run along over three furlongs. Bonny Lea and Hawthorn finished slightly in front in 40a. Marble Mount; was better than Scaramoucho over a round in 1.49 4-ss, and Catimcs ran four furlongs in 53 l-ss. THE JUMPERS. Freyja (Burgess), Twinkler (Garrett), and Absent (Craddock), were schooled over tho steeplechase fences on the flat. Freyja and Twinkler jumped satisfactorily, but Absent lost his rider at the second fence of the double. DEATH OF MR. J. BEBAN. [ilY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The death occurred yesterday morning of tho owner-trainer, Mr. J. Beban, who had been cuilering from a serious illness for sonio weeks past. Before leaving tho west coast some four years ago Mr. Bebah raced Tip Up and Consultation at the coast meetings and on his change to Christchurcli he took up training ostensibly in quest of an open-air life. He was ».??ocialed with his business partners, Mes :iv C. Webb and G. R. Hunter, in tho racnia of several useful horses, including Decoy Bird, Tano, Topere, Audionco, Sapient and Appeal, and pained a satisfactory amount of success with them. Mr. Beban mado himself very popular at Riccarton, and hia loss will be severely felt.
