CANTERBURY DOINGS.

TRAINING AT RICCARTON. HORSES FOR AUSTRALIA. WAIMATE HUNT CANDIDATES. [HY TKI.EGH APrt. —OWN COimESPONPENT. ] CHKISTCIIURCII, Thursday. The recent rain has made the Riccarton tracks softer than at any previous stage during the winter months. and in consequence there was very little fast work today. The short inside track was the only one availablo besides the sand, and although slippery after an overnight frost it provided satisfactory going under the circumstances. Nightmarch was given long easy work with a. short sprint home. A. MeAulny lias made arrangements to leave Wellington by the Ulimaroa on August 8. and this will give him longer time to come to a decision in regard to the two-year-olds selected to accompany Nightmarch and True Shaft. Oay Crest and A del ph i were restricted to slow exercise. This pair and the rising i two-year-old Iloynl Doll, by Chief Ruler j from Baby Doll, will leave in charge of | T. Lloyd by the Ulimaroa, sailing from Wellington next week. It was at 0110 time intended to include in the team the Hunting Song—Flagship youngster The Quoin, but he has not come to hand as quickly us Royal Doll, and it was deemed advisable to give him more time. Arikiwai Sh'.pes Well. Arikiwai, joined by Paquito at four furlongs. reeled off six furlongs in 1.13, the pair finishing together. Arikiwai has given every satisfaction lately, and is a likely member of L'\ D. .Tones' Sydney team. A definite decision will be delayed until after ho is galloped again on Saturday. Limerick Bprinted home three furlongs in 423. and First Sight did similar work in ■lis, both under a strong pull. First Sight is very well nt present and should oarn distinction on the Sydney trip. Dunraven and Craigavon were each allotted short sprints and seemed benefited by their racing at Wellington. Arrowmir, who is in more solid condition than when last seen in public, reeled off half-a-xnile in 52 l-sa. He is to be ridden by M. Kirwan in his Waimnte engagement, and should collect expenses. Much interest was attached to a schooling task by Lord Ranald (W. Scobie). 110 negotiated eleven of the steeplechase fences satisfactorily, but would havo done better with more pace on. It cannot be said that he has been jumping us well as at this time last year and seems inclined to reach for his fences, but better results can lie looked for when he is called upon to go taster than on the tracks. A pleasant feature of Ins preparation, however, in that he is remaining sound and there is every indication that the public will see him in action again next month. 110 has been nominated again for the Homeby Steeplechase, which ho won in a comfortable manner twelve months ago. Lancer's Preparation. Marco Polo (I. Tilsou) negotiated oipht fences well, but showed a tendency to tun down some of the obstacles. He is a clever jumper and will probably improve in company. lie will bo ridden by Tilson at Waimnte on Saturday, and should give a good account of himself. Kulrango (I. Tilson) gave another attractive display over a round of the country. He also would do better with a mate. Gold Mint (L. Evans) jumped eight hurdles in a slovenly manner, indicating that he will have to improve considerably to turn out a payable proposition over tho sticks. I The only Riccarton representatives at the j Waimnte Hunt Meeting will be Arrowmir. Troilua and Marco Polo. The Clan was accepted for, but the trip has been cancelled owing to the serious illness of his trainer. J. Beban. Lancer has' continued to make satisfac- ■ tory progress during the past few weeks and should race prominently next mouth, j He figures in the nominations for the Longbeach Hurdles, an event he won last year from Kawini and l'crle Do Leon, and this raco should make him a very fit candidate for his National engagement. PALMEIiSTON NORTH NEWS. SPELL FOR RED BANK. HYMESTRASON'S SORENESS. [ny TELEGRAPH. —OWN COIIIIKSPONDKNT.j PALMERSTON NORTH. Thursday. Red Dank, who broke a blood-vessel while competing at Trentham, has been turned out for a spell. r i he All Red gelding likewise bled at Napier Park, and it is to be hoped that the spell will remedy the weakness. His trainer, L. Knapp, is meantime centring his attention on Archeria and Poppy Day, but it is his intention to school Hunting Boy in the near future. L. Knapp has in hand a filly by Acre from Kinsem, the dam having criginnlly raced in the colours of Mr. T. A. Duncan, when she proved herself to be a very useful sort. Included in Kinseii's earlier victories were the Telegraph Handicap at Marlon and the Borough Handicap at Wanganui, while she demonstrated that she could also stay by winning the Autumn Handicap at Wanganui and the Marlon Cup in the closing stages of her active career. The filly has been named Acco. C Jones in at present engaged handling and educating a quartello of youngsters, and ho had a full-sister to Arajean on tlio tracks yesterday morning. She is a Bolidlooking customer and promise* to bo much bigger than her elder sister. His other youngsters are a Black Ronald —Millie Abbey colt, who already stands 15 hands, a Nigger Minstrel-Sleeping Beauty filly, being Huts n half-sister to Glim Rossio, and a Nigger Minstrel-Jean Laddo colt. Ilyrnealrason, who proved to be Awapuni's largest winner at Trentham. has thrown off all signs of Hie soreness which troub' -d him after his race on the second day at Wellington. Ho wna given an easy task on Tuesday morning, and went quite freely. Very little fast work was done at Awapnni on Tuesday. Archeria and Otairi, carrying substantial weights, ran homo from the five-furlong post on the plough in ).(> 2-5. Olairi is brimful of lifo and he should not tako long to wind up to concert pitch. Moil ton Treasury slipped over five furlongs oil the grass proper—-the flags being well out --in 1.7 2-5. The Shambles two-year-old, who is a stable companion of Moutoa Treasury, had Desert Lad and Four Aces as companions over half n mile on the plough, which was left behind in s')s. Spcaropn and Lady Spear, two Greyspear representatives from Mrs McDonnld's stable, who nro owned in the Wairarapa. ran >ix furlongs on the plough in 1.20. They will bo given an outing nt the local meeting, and Spenropn promises to be distinctly useful Robbie's Mistake and Braggart jumped away at Hie mile post on the course proper to negotiate the last six furlongs in 1.2-1 2-5 Robbie's Mistake was holding the advantage coining down the straight, but Brnggirt answered to the whip to get on terms at the post. Wnrzone, in spite of having considerably the worst of the weights, finished too strongly for Askari. Wnrzone, who has improved considerably, figures in tho Broadway Handicap at Manawatu while Askari will contest the Hunt Cup Skyrider started out with Mandate to do a round of the big fences, but Mandate lost his rider at tho second of the brush double. Skyrider went on alone to completo her task satisfactorily. Mandate was remounted and sent over the single brush and hencoop along tho back, but ho did not appreciate tho double and ran otl twice before he was persuaded to negotiate it.
