An interesting piece of schooling work was witnessed at Te Kapa this morning when Pendavics (N. Syrne) was schooled in company with his stnblemnte Pcndennis (R. E. Thompson) over six fences on the steeplechase course. Starting at the sod wall, the pair took in the live hedge and the sod wall at (he entrance of tho straight, going round again and jumping tho same obstacles. Tho pace was on nil (he way, and both gave a splendid exhibition of clean, fast jumping. Pendavics, as a result, of his good display, enhanced his prospects for (he Grand National Meeting, where he will be ridden by N. Syme. Pondennis, who was having his first schooling task for about two years, shaped surprisingly well, and if he can be kept sound he should be well forward for early spring racing. THE "HAT TRICK." R. Thursday, The To llapa horseman Roy Syme, who rode Wiltshire to victory in each of the last two Grand National Steeplechases, has been engaged to ride Matu in tliia year's contest. Syme was successful on .Vlatu in tho July Steeplechase at Trenthnrn last Saturday, and aa ho seems to understand this horse well, the combination might prove a difficult proposition n tho Grand National While it is rather against tho law of averages for a jockey to ride the winner of the Grand National throe years on end.
