HOSPITAL BOARD ARCHITECT.
Sir, —The method adopted by the Hospital Board in making the above appointment leaves one with an unpleasant suspicion tis to the bona fides of the board in (he matter. Applications for the appointment were invited by public advertisement. It appears from the report in the Herald that 15 applications were received. These applications it also appears were dealt with at the ordinary meeting of the board with a full agenda paper of other important matters before it. Apart from its duty to the public to assure for this important post that the best person was obtained the board certainly owed it to the profession to give full and proper consideration to the applications and to carefully weigh tTie respective merits of the applicants. It is impossible to believe that this could have been done in the circumstances. The normal procedure would have been to have appointed a sub-committee to examine the applications and make a report to the full board. The matter of 1 these appointments to public bodies is rapidly becoming something in the nature of a public scandal There is more than a suspicion that personal friendship or relationship receives more consideration than docs fitness lor the post. Dr. Gun- , son deserves the thanks of the community for his proper stand in the matter, which it is regrettable to see received no sup- • port. Architect.
