CALCUTTA SHAKEN.
EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS. WORST IN LIVING MEMORY. PEOPLE PANTO-STRICKEN. MANY CAMP IN OPEN. TERROR IN THE NIGHT. By Telegraph T'ress Association— Copyright. (Received July 3. 11. 15 P.m.) DELHI. July 3. The city of Calcutta last night and again at three o'clock this morning was rocked by the most severe earthquake shocks experienced there in living memory.
The tremors were directly north and south.
Most of the solid blocks of residential flats swayed and the whole city sprang to life.
Lights were turned on, lifts went up and down and many people entered motor-cars and dashed out to the Maidan where they camped. The streets were as noisy as they aro on a Saturday night after the theatres have closed but by four o'clock this morning all was quiet again.
