PETROL AND TYRE TAX.

OVER £1,000,000 LAST YEAR.

AUCKLAND'S LARGE SHARE.

Over £1,000,000 was collected in petrol lax from motorists in New Zealand last year, in addition to £157,474 from the duly on tyres. Of these amounts approximately one-third was paid on imports through the Port of Auckland. Figures specially compiled by the Comptroller of Customs for the llekald show that 66,471,874 gallons of petrol were imported during the year ended March 31, of which 21,622,646 gallons were discharged at Auckland. The total tax collected at all ports in New Zealand amounted to £1,029,231, and that at Auckland to £331,691, or .sligiitly over 32 per cent, of the total. The total tyre tax for Iho Dominion was £157,474, of which the Port of Auckland yielded £37,213, or about 30 per cent, of the total.
