BUSINESS ON EXCHANGES.

RETURN ON INVESTMENTS. Following is a list of yesterday's tramactions on Now Zealand Stock Exchanges. In tho second column is given tho return, based on tho last dividend, from investment at the quoted price. In tho case of Government and other redeemable securities the return includes redemption. Tho first column gives tho figures at which tho sales vvero made:—

NEW ZEALAND FRUIT. SHIPMENTS TO ENGLAND. SALES OF APPLES AND PEARS. [raoM era own corbesfondext.] LONDON, May IG. The Port Brisbane arrived at Hamburg a few days ago with 3fi,oCo cases of New Zealand apples (Dunns and Jonathans), and 2000 cases of pears. Of the apples all tho Jonathans had been sold by private treaty, and all but 7000 cases of tho Dunns. For Jonathans 16s to 20s had been obtained, and when tho remaining Dunns were sold by auction yesterday they fetched 13s 6d to 16s, equal to what had boon received for those sold by privato treaty. From these prices 2s should bo deducted fur expenses. For the 2000 cases of pears submitted to auction 14s 3d per case was obtained. All the fruit was in good condition. The merchants report that the demand is good and the colour of tho fruit is better than it was last year.

For the past week the market lias been very bare. Although there are New Zealand apples arid pears in the shops there is not a case to be bought in Covent Garden. From to-morrow, however, things will be different, several shipments being due to arrive in close succession. REDUCTION OF DIVIDEND. AUSTRALIAN GUARANTEE CORP. Having announced in February that the payment of the dividend on ordinary shares for (he quarter ended December 3L had been deferred, the directors of I lie Australian Guarantee Corporation, Ltd., have now decided to repommend a final dividend for the nine months ended June 30 of per cent., making 10 per cent- for the year. They state that, although Ibe company has sufficient funds to pay the usual dividend at tho rate of 15 per cent, per annum, they have adopted n conservative policy owing to the existing abnormal financial conditions.

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated June 28, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London : Tallow.—The market continues quiet. There was no auction this week and prices are easier, but thero was little more business at the decline. Present quotations for spot arc: Mutton, fine, 335: fair (0 good, 30s to 31s 6d; dark to dull, 25s to 275. Beef: Sweet and/or mixed. 355; fair to good, 29s to 30s 6d; dark to dull, 25s to 275: mixed, fair to good, 25s to 30s ; gut. etc., 23s (o 265. Fruit.—Tin apple trade is very slow and prices easier. The present market prices are: Stunner and Delicious, 9s to 12s ; Dougherty, Statesman, Jonathan, Rokewood and Tasnia, 10s to 12s; Rome Beauty, Salome and Premier, 10s to lis; Granny Smith, 14s to 20s. Prices for pears (ex cool store) are: Winter olis, 15s; bcurre, Easter, 12s per crate.

Hemp.—The Manila market is quiet but wilh a mora steady tone, and values are nominally unchanged. Tho sisal market is quiet, and prices are lower. Large unsold arrivals are pressed for sale. No. 1, fair average quality, June-August shipment., and Julv-Septernber shipment, sold as low as £2-1 10s ; No. 2, £23 15s at the close. Sellers quote: Oetober-Deecm-ber-.November-Jannary shipment, No. 1, fair average quality, £23. The Mexican Co-operativo have reduced prices equal to £25 18s 6d. c.i.f., New York, hut. buyers consider this too dear. The Now Zealand market is very quiet, but with no selling pressure. High fair and fair afloat sold at £24; stocks in London at May 31. wore 60 tons, against 55 tons at the same time last year. Wool. —The Bradford market is quiet, with a tendency in favour of buyers. Present quotations for tops arc: 64>., warp, 2s 4d to 2s average, 2s 3d to 2s 3J,d; 40's, prepared, Is 3Jd; others unchanged. KOPU CATTLE YARDS. PRICKS AT OPENING SALE.
