EXCITING SPORT.
PIGS IN UREWERAS. BOAR WITH THICK HIDE. Some thrilling sport in pig-hunting in the. Urewera country by Messrs. F. Milligan and H. lies, of Gisborne, resulted in their return with two trophies, one of which is unusual. Two pigs were killed, ono being a huge black and white boar, over 6ft. in length, and weighing it is estimated well over 3001b. On skinning the animal it was found to tho amazement of tho hunters, that tho hide was nearly 2in, thick. Tho •tusks formed a complete circlo 6in. in diameter. That tho boar was an old animal could bo seen also by the fact that 'it had been wounded many years ago. Tho bullet was found firmly embedded in .tho jaw,'having been almost worn down. 'When the boar was shot at it was in tho .mfdst of a herd'of about thirty, ranging down to weaners hardly mote than 18in. in length. . ■ • Though experienced pigrhtrotors, with years of sport behind them in vdrious parts of New Zealand the sportsmen 1 ! had never seen a boar with such a thick hide. . , > , The second trophy is a'magnificent black boar's head, also with splendid tusks. v ' All the hunting was done by tho stalking method, no dogs being used.
