ADULT EDUCATION.
VALUE IN THE COUNTRY. GOOD WORK BEING DONE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] HAMILTON, Sunday. A large gathering attended the annual dinner of the Waikato branch of tho Workers' Educational Association, which was held in Hamilton last evening. Members -and friends were present from the centres at Auckland, To Aroha-, To Awamutu, Puahue, .Te Pahu, Te Kowhai, Horsham Downs and Newstead. The Mayor of Hamilton, Mr. J. R. Fow, presided. An address was given by Dr. H. E. Annett, of Matangi, on "Tho Relation of Adult to the Rural Community," in which he emphasised the value of the work being carried on by the workers' education movement in the country districts. Tho association, ho said, was teaching people who had already had considerable experience of life and was giving them an opportunity of studying various subjects which otherwise would have been beyond their reach. Professor H. Belshaw, professor in economics at tho Auckland University College, also gave a short address. He pointed out the necessity for a cultural education as distinct from a technical education and said there was a wide field for this, class of work in tho farming community for tho Workers'' Educational Association and kindred bodies. The principal difficulties, however, were thoso of finance and the lack of suitable, lecturers. Mr. W. B. Cockor, president of the Auckland district council, Mr. J. 0. Shearer, of tho Auckland University College, and Mr. F. A. Delamore, chairman of the advisory committee of the association in Hamilton, also spoke. A programme of musical numbers, play reading and community singing was given.
