VIEW BOOK OF AUCKLAND.

WORLD-WIDE DISTRIBUTION. HIGH STANDARD ATTAINED. "Auckland, the Gateway to Now Zealand," is the title of a book of views, with lettorpross, illustrating Auckland city and province, which has been produced through the co-operation of public bodies and commercial organisations in tho city and is about to be put into world-wide circulation. The quality of the publication is outstanding, in regard, to both the nature of tho contents and the manner in which they ore presented. The consensus of opinion among those who have had an opportunity to judge is that the production is worthy of its purpose, which is to show to the people of other parts, particularly over the seas, the greatness of urban and rural Auckland, in both achievement and potentiality. Tho happy combination of tho utilitarian and the beautiful which exists in this portion of New Zealand is strikingly shown in the illustrations. Tho foreword says: "Auckland citizens, through their representative public bodies, have united to publish a pictorial representation of their city and province, that they may extend tho knowledge of this wonderful country to those overseas, for tho purpose of materially increasing their trade and to attract new settlers, residents and visitors, as well as to interest capital for investment in Auckland commerco and endeavour." Picture and Story. Forty-eight pages of letterpress and illustrations arc enclosed within a cover, on tho front of which is represented in colour a view of portion of tho city and harbour. A superior quality of paper has been used throughout, and the illustrations, which have been well chosen to cover tho wide field of subjects available, cannot fail to produco a favourable impression. In picture and story are portrayed the main features of the history of Auckland since its foundation on September 14, 1840, by Captain William Hobson, the first Governor of the colony. Tho future of tho city and provinco are envisaged. Among the most striking of the many illustrations aro reproductions of several aerial photographs of the city and suburbs, and panoramic viows of tho harbour. Civic activities, tourist attractions, primary industries, secondary industries, sporting activities, climatic conditions, education, social welfare, and tho harbour are headings under which the contents of the publication are grouped. In regard to each the reading matter is informative and tho illustrations appropriate and highly interesting. Oople3 for .Overseas.

The scheme to advertise Auckland in this way was conceived by . the Auckland Advertising Club, and that body had thq, co-operation of the City Council, the Harbour Board, the Power Board, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Manufacturers' Association. The book has been edited and compiled by the publishers, Wilson and Horton, Limited, in conjunction with a committee appointed by the public bodies concerned.

The first edition consists of 50,000 copies, mainly for overseas distribution through shipping, trade and tourist offices. The Canadian Pacific Railway and the Union Steam Ship Company have arranged to make a comprehensive distribution of the booklet in all the Englishspeaking countries, more particularly Great Britain, Canada and the United States of America.

The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, yesterday expressed admiration of the high standard of publicity attained in "Auckland, the Gateway to New Zealand." He said the undoubted attractions and advantages of the city as a place of residence and of business had been presented in a,manner which could not fail to compel attention. Tributes to Publication.

Mr. G. Finn, president of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association, said it was a very fine publication, which he thought was going to do a lot of good. The 'object was more to bring permanent settlers to the country than to induce tourists to make a visit, and if it was successful in that direction it would bo helping one of tho main planks of the manufacturers' platform. Increased population was needed to stimulate industrial life.

"It is the best publication of its kind I have seen," said Mr. M. Rudd, of the Auckland office of the Union Steam Ship Company. "The whole 'get-up' is excellent, and it reflects the highest credit on the publishers. The letterpress is splendid; the illustrations are not only good, but they are just tho type which will attract visitors to New Zealand. Every page is brimful of interest, and I am sure that the publication will be welcome in any household in any part of the world." Mr. Rudd added that the Union Company would be doing its part by sending the publication to practically all parts of tho world where English was spoken," and ho hoped that other organisations would do likewise
