ASHBURTON FIELDS.
RACING AND TROTTING.
TO-DAY'S EVENTS REVIEWED. PROSPECTS IN STEEPLECHASE. The- winter meeting of tha Ashburton County Racing Club will bo held to-day. • Our correspondent telegraphed last evening ; that the weather promised to be fine, i Following are details of the fields, with j :i review of thu prospects in each race by j our correspondent.-, HYNDS HUBDUES, Of £113; 1* miles. st. lb. at. lb. Lancer. . . .10 12 Heisler ... 9 0 Pangolin ... 10 4 Zeuxifl .... 3 0 Troilua .... 10 4 Gay Fashion .90 Oritlainb ... 9 3 Royal Laird 9 0 Lancer will be improved as a result of hia Timaru races and should turn the j tables on Troilua. Pangolin is not entitled to much consideration, but Heisler threatens to be dangerous and will keep the field busy throughout. Most support may go to LANCER. HEISLER. TROILUS. MOBETON HACK, Of £'100; 8 fur. st. lb. at. lb. Kentish Lady 912 Night Effort . 3 2 Sweet Refrain 912 Last Mark . 3 1 Fortalico . . 9 10 Giggleawick ..90 Tan.iT . 9 5 Garvary ... 3 0 Valuator ... 9 a Philanderer .90 Colonel Ques 3 5 The field is fairly well balanced and a lot will depend on the start. Giggleswick haß shown plenty of pace on tha track, but cannot be depended upon at tha barrier. In this regard he may be at a disadvantage with some good beginners in tho race. Investors may support KENTISH LADY. GARVARY. GIGGLESWICK.
MAYFIELO HANDICAP, Of £130; lz mileß. st. lb. at. lb. Ea.zo 9 3 Quarterdeck 3 0 Evening ... 3 4 Discourse . . . 3 Q Royal Mini . 3 4 Punchcstown. . 3 0 Toawai ... 3 3 Fortalice .30 The quality of the contestants caa be gauged by tiia fact that Haze heads the list. Ha lost form after a severe gruelling on the West Coast circuit, but has 3hown much improvement lately. Evening was thought to be a good proposition on the Erst day at Timuru. but failed. Royal Mint will not bo in his element an a fine track but the conditions will suit Toawai. who, however, seems to hn.vo gone off slightly in the past few weeks after showing earlier promise. Quarterdeck impressed, by her gallop during the week and will bo ridden by Gr. Salt, who did well with her when she waa in the Chokeboro stable. Favouritism may be extended to HAZE. TOAWAI. EVENING. DROMQHE STEEPLECHASE, Of £175; about 2 iniie3. st. lb. st. lb. Radiate .... 11 12 French Fleet . 3 10 Tunamoe ... 10 3 Parader ... 3 0 Gala Day . . 10 3 Bladon .... 3 0 Wairio ... 9 11 Kulranga ... 3 0 Diarn'd Jack 3 11 Radiate will be on hand to fulfil his engagement and will probably be sent out a ! short-priced favourite. The opposition is j by no means strong and his task 3iiould not be difficult. Tunamoe ran two faix races at Timara. while Wairio had an easy win in the Forbury Hack Steeplechase at the recent Dunedin meeting. Gala Day is 3till practically untried antf his prospects cannot be recommended as yet. Of the others Diamond Jock reads the best. Tlio public may fancy RADIATE. WAIRIO, TU3TAM.OE. MA3ONAN HANDICAP, Of ±'100: 6 fur. at. !b. st. Jb. Subdivision 10 fl First Raid . . 3 11 Rascal 9 13 Revision ... 3 0 Rascal would bo in strong favour on a soft track. but under the conditions likely to prevail First Raid should prove the better proposition. The public may support RASCAL. FIRST RAID.

NOTES FROM RICCARTON. LORD RANALD'S DISPLAY. [by telegqapii.—o\ra cobrespondent.] CHRISTCHTRCH, Friday. Taking advantage of a soft track Lord Ranald (W Suohie) was sent aver two rounds of the schooling country at Riccarton to-day. In spite of not having much pace on- he gave his usual good display until he got in too close to the first of tho brush double at the end of the task, and, screwing badly, hia riuer was unable to keep him on the second. He was taken buck and negotiated tho two fences without any mistake. The future of tho big gelding is still undecided, but similar schooling will continue Marco Polo (I. Tilson) negotiated a round of the steeplechase fences to-day in l pleasing manner Ho will probably be a contestant at the Wuimate Hunt meeting on July 10. P. P. Claridge is the only Riccarton trainer represented ixi the acceptances for the Oamaru unvoting on July 5. his team consisting of Starshaoter, Haze, Royal Mint, Rascal, Kentish Lady and Homecoming. Tuku was not accepted for at the Ashburton meeting, but will remain at P-.ccar-ton in view of racing at the Wellington meeting. t i-nchestofn will be tackling open comrm ly for the first time in tho ilavfield Handicap at Ashburton to-morrow. _ He is a useful gailopei and partial to a distance, and if tho pace should not. I)n fast early he may be the one of the field to spring a surprise.
