THEFTS FROM HOUSES.
OFFENDER SENT TO PRISON. PROTECTION FOR PUBLIC. [BY TELEGRAM. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] ROTORUA, Friday. A case arising from a series of robberies from houses was concluded to-day, when Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., sentenced Hape Williams to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour, to bo followed by reformative detention for two years. On othor charges for which the maximum penalty was six months' imprisonment accused was sentenced to threo .months' hard labour, the terms to bo concurrent. On various other charges he was. convicted. Accused had pleaded guilty to about 30 thefts. It was stated that ho entered houses whilo the occupants wero moving about, choosing tho hours _ between 7 and 8 p.m. Daring and ingenuity marked his operations. Somo houses wero entered four times. Nino of the charges wero for thefts in 1930 and 20 for offences in 1929. A largo amount of stolen property was found in the possession of accused. It was stated that ho' was a hard-working man and was employed as .a motor-driver. 110 had a large 'family and recently lost his wife. The magistrate, referring to tho offences, said the public must bo protected against such depredations, which wero becoming too common.
