LARGE THEFT ALLEGED.

CASHBOX CONTAINING £669. j SUSPECT ARRESTED IN CITY. WELLINGTON FIRM'S LOSS. Following his arrest with another man on a chargo of stealing an overcoat at Piikekoho Frederick Davis, aged 38, was charged with stealing a cash-box, containing money, cheques and' bonds, of a total value' of £669, from a Wellington firm of solicitors, Messrs. Levi and Jackson. The theft of tho cash-box wa's committed: on April 29.; •Accused, was arrested in Newmarket on Thursday afternoon following a complaint to. the Pukekoho police by a clothier, who discovered that a man's ovorcoat was missing from his shop. Ho remembered seeling two men near his premises earlior in the day and suspected that they had been responsible for tho disappearance of the icoat. Tho police were informed and it ; was thought possible that the men had left by a service-bus for Auckland, which departed shortly after the coat was stolon. 4.. constable boarded tho bus in Newmarket and the two men wero arrested as suspects. In tho Police Court yesterday morning tho two, Davis, who was described as a tunneller, and John Valvai, aged 30, dentist, for whom Mr. Noblo appeared, Were charged with tho theft of tho overcoat, the property of Alexander Gill. SubInspector Shanahan stated that possibly other charges would bo brought against tho men and applied for a remand, which was granted. Accused wore each allowed bail in the sum .of £SO. After the session of tho Court detectives arrested Davis on tho chargo from Wellington and lie was placed in custody. He will be charged in tho Police Court this morning with tho' theft of tho cash-box and it is likely that ho will be remanded to appear in Wellington after the other theft charge has been dealt with.
