TROUBLE ON MAUI POMARE.

LOOSE RIVETING FOUND. CONTRACT FOR REPAIR WORK. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. The technical advisory committee, under the chairmanship of Mr. Breeze, chief surveyor of ships, has carefully investigated the cause of the trouble -which developed in the enginoroom of the Government motor-ship Maui Pomare, and has made a discovery which will enable the fault to be permanently rectified The principal fuel tanks run beneath the two main engines, and the investigators found large areas of loose riveting. The rivets were packed with some material which has fallen out. It is necessary to renew the rivets on the whole of the tank tops on which the main engines aro bedded; therefore before repairs are begun the engines must be I'fted out of the ship. This will be done at the Wellington wharves within the next few days, and the tender of the Wellington Patent Slip Company has been accepted for the whole of the work, which it is estimated will take six weeks. In addition to renewing the faulty rivets, it is intended to provide added Strengthening to remove all possibility of vibration in the main engines while under load.
