SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF.
MOVEMENT IN AUCKLAND. SUPPORT FROM MINISTER. A further step ha 3 been taken in the movement to induce the Government to establish special classes for totally deaf and dumb children in Auckland, In a letter to Mr. R. C. Macpherson, chairman of the recently-formed Association for the Welfare of the Deaf, the [Minister of Education, the Hon. EL Atmore, states that the appointment of a qualified teacher of deaf children in 'Auckland has been approved. The Minister expressed surprise on learning that Sri Auckland and Whangarei there were 19 deaf children who were not attending school. Continuing, Mr. Atmore says:—"On April 26 and 28 advertisements and locals appeared in the Auckland daily newspapers inviting parents and guardians of totally deaf children to send the names of the afflicted children to the Director !of Education. So far no replies have been received. I am very interested in the education of the deaf, but I cannot take any further action until I receive the names of the children for whom the* establishment of a class is required." L'hc Auckland Education Board als wrote to Mr. Macpherson stating that it has under consideration the provision of a Suitable classroom, and that it has resolved to nrgo the Education Department to authorise a grant for the tuition of deaf children in Auckland. At the present the only school for deaf and dumb children is at Sumner, Christchurch. The existing classes at the Newton East School are for those who are partially deficient in speech and hearing. The Association for the Welfare of the Deaf is to call an early meeting of its members to consider the question further and the names and addresses of children requiring specialised education will be forwarded to the Minister of Education.
