MOUNT EDEN RATING.
Sir, —Mr. Melville's letter,- as _ published in the Herald on June 24, in it's turn calls for a reply. He was the only councillor, it is true, who dissented from the proposal to increase _ the borough rates to 4s 2d, but it is incorrect for him to say that he disagreed with the findings of the sub-coihmittee set up to investigate the matter. One item on the estimates only did he disagree with, which involving only some £2OO odd would not in itself affect the striking of any rate, as he knows. . As Mr. Melville has seen' fit to publish his attitude, he will throw real light on the subject if he will state publicly what he thinks would 'have prevented the necessity of increasing the rates as . struck. That is the real issue. It is no use. merely dissenting, and had 'he made any' proposal in council that would have obviated the increase, plenty of support would have been forthcoming. As one of the senior councillors, he must take his share of responsibility in the position the council now finds itself. F. L. Rendeix.
