Mis 3 Ruby Turvey, of Wanganui, i 3 visiting Auckland, Mrs. Howard C. Tripp, of Timaru, left this week on a visit to Auckland. Mrs. Catchpole, of Hamilton, is visiting Auckland, and is. staying at Hotel Cargen. Mrs. Oswald Smith, cf_ Hamilton, i 3 visiting Auckland, and is staying at Hotel Cargen. Mrs. Galvin, of Hamilton, is visiting Auckland, and is the guest of Mrs. A. S.' Faire, Sarsfield Street, Heme Bay. Miss D. Grant Co wen, who has been for a trip abroad, returned to Auckland last evening by the Port Fremantle. Mrs. A. Tudhope, who has been the guest of Mrs. H. R- Hesketh, Gillies Avenue, Epsom, returns to* Hamilton .today. Miss E. Eisler, of Toronto, who has been visiting New Zealand during the p,i3t year, leaves Auckland this evening for Wellington, en route for Sydney, England and Canada. The monthly meeting of the Hobsonvilla Women's Institute was held last week at the residence of Mrs. W. Ocklestou, who presided. A lecture on "Rose Cultivation" was given by Mr. Cutler, of Henderson, which was followed by a demonstration of pruning. The hostesses were Miss J. Herd and Miss E. Ockleston. The Otahuhu public hall was artistically decorated with bunting and streamers for the fifth annual gathering of the Otahuhu residents, which took place this week. Dancing proved very enjoyable and items were rendered during the evening by Mrs. H. Christini, Mrs. Waters, Mr. Marks, Mr. Christini and Mr. Venabies. Supper was served by a committee of ladies. A Women's Medical Association has been formed in Adelaide with 16 women doctors as members. Its object i 3 to found a clinic in one of the poor quarters of the city, so that wor-"n lacking means rtiay be advised and treated by women doctors. Mrs M. A. English, of Auckland, left New Zealand in March and travelled via Vancouver. She had an interesting trip via San Francisco, the Grand Canyon, the principal Canadian centres, and New York. Mrs. English, who is travelling for pleasure, expects to arrive in New Zealand in November, but in tha meantime she will tour in the British Isles and will also go to the Continent, states our London correspondent. Miss Kathleen Oakden, of Hamilton, a recent arrival from the Dominion, left for France thip week on her way to the Italian Lakes, Switzerland, and the Rhine, states our London correspondent on May 22. On her return she will go first to the south-western counties by motor-car and then will go north to Scotland and the English Lakes. She will probably return to New Zealand some time in the New Year. An ardent movement is afoot in America for the protection of roadside beauty, and recently a bill was passed in New Jersey for taxing all outdoor advertising. The chairman of the Committee for' Restriction of Outdoor Advertising is Mrs. Julius Morgan, and the secretary is Mrs. George Miles. The bill requires a licence for all bill-boards, which are taxed three cents a foot, and niav not bo erected within 500 ft. of a road intersection. Y verv great sorrow has befallen the Rev. J. *D. Russell, vicar Luke's, Oamaru, and Archdeacon of North Otago, states our London correspondent. He and Mrs. Russell were en route for England by the Balranald when, during the hot weather, Mrs. Russell had a stroke. She is at present at Harrow, in the home of Mr. Russell's sister, lying in a very helpless state, with a nurse in attendance. Miss Russell has been cabled for,_ and it is hoped that her mother's condition will have improved by the time she arrives in England'in July. A very full programme had been planned, and Mrs. Russell was to have been a delegate from Dunedin Diocese to the Mothers' Union Conference in London in July.

Mrs. Leslie Greener, the New Zealand artist who will, perhaps, be best recognised as iliss Rhona Haszard, who lives at Alexandria, has received an invitation to contribute work to an exhibition of pictures by contemporary British artists organised bv the Prince of Wales, to be held at the Grafton Gallery, London, in June states our London correspondent, writing 011 May 22. The exhibition is on Behalf of the British Legion, and it b tho aim of the organisers to make the collection " really representative of the best in modern art." Among those sending exhibits are; Muirhead Bone, Sir D. Y. Cameron, Sir George Clausen, Augustus John, Sir William Orpen, Sir John Lavery, and many other well-known artists. Mrs. Greener's contribution is 'an oil painting; " La Coupee, Sark. The Victoria League Girls' Committee held a most enjoyable bridge party in tho league rooms on Wednesday evening. The room was brightly decorated with bowls of Iceland poppies. The prizes were won by Miss Noakes, Miss Spence and Miss D. Maciarland. Among those present were; Mrs. L. S.
