NEW ZEALAND DEFENCE.
DRASTIC CHANGES OPPOSED. RETURNED SOLDIERS' VIEW. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.} WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Opposition to any drastic change in the defence system of New Zealand, or in the expenditure upon defence was voiced by the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association at the aunual meeting last evening. The following resolution was moved:— "The defence of the Empire being a matter • transcending local conditions, politics and passing economic phases, this conference urges the Government to delay consideration of any drastic change in the defence system until the opinion of experts be obtained, or a Royal Commission set up to inquire into the system of defence. This conference is further of opinion that the Dominion should bear its fair share of the defence of the Empire." Mr. W. Terry, of Wellington, moved as an amendment the inclusion of the word "party" before_ "politics," and that the import of the resolution be that the conference "opposes any drastic change in the defence system or in expenditure upon defenco." The resolution as amended was carried.
