AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.
MATCH WITH SURREY.
RAIN INTERRUPTS PLAY.
COUNTY 140 FOR FIVE.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright, LONDON, June 18,
Play in the cricket match Australia v. Surrey at the Oval was commenced at noon to-day. It had rained heavily in the night, and the outfield was slow. Richardson is resting owing to a severe cold, which handicapped him in the test match. Hornibrook has a strained leg and is also resting.
Surrey are without their fast bowler, Gover, and also Ducat, who has had a family bereavement. Hohbs and Sandham who opened the batting for Surrey, batted steadily, but Hobbs was obviouslv tired after the test match. He reached forward to one from Grimmett and was easily stumped. He had made 19 of the total of 34. The score was still the same when the Grirnmett-Walker combination had another success, Barling flicking a ball for the wicket-keeper to take a good catch on the leg side. Hurwood secured Sandham's wicket, then again he was unaccountably taken off. In a bad light after luncheon Grimmett had the batsmen in trouble. However, the 100 appeared on the board after two hours' play. A'Beckctt, in the slips, missed Shepherd off Hurwood and the stroke made that batsman 50 in 75 minutes.
Wilson attempted to hit one from Hurwood and lost his middle stump. Then Shepherd was easily caught in the slips without addition to the total, five wickets being down for 117. Gregory and Fender were enterprising, but a terrific thunderstorm burst at 3.35 p.m. and the ground was quickly drenched, making further play impossible for the day. Details of the scores are:— SURREY.—First Innings. COUNTY SIDE ALL OUT. FIRST INNINGS SCORE 162. (Received Juno QO, 1.15 a.m.) LONDON, June 19. When play was resumed at the Oval to-day between the Australian cricketers and Surrey the weather was fine. Fender failed to add to his score before being caught by Fairfax off Grimmett. Gregory was also soon out in the same way. The remaining batsmen did little. Baldwin was caught by Woodfull off Fairfax I before he had scored. Peach was bowled by Grimmett for seven, and Brooks was also caught off Grimmett-for four. Allom was not out for 5. With six . extras the total reached 162. TALK WITH THE KING. PLAYERS WEAR HATS. REPLY TO MANY PROTESTS. (Received June 20, 12.5 a.m.) LONDON, June 19. As a result of newspapers publishing photographs of Australian cricketers wearing their hats while conversing with the King recently, the manager of the team, Mr. W. L. Kelly, and the captain, Woodfull, have received letters of protest from many quarters. Mr. Kelly says the players retained their hats at the King's request after their introduction to him. Richardson from his bedroom in a hotel to-day telephoned to his wife, son and brother at Adelaide.
