SOCIETY SURPRISE.

PRESENTATION CANCELLED. WIFE OF AIR OFFICER. LONDON, Juno 9. London society circles have been stirred by a London Gazetto announcement, that the presentation of Mrs. Christopher Courtney at their Majesties' Court on May 15 has been cancelled. Mrs. Courtney, whose husband is a Royal Air Force group captain and Deputy-Director of Operations and Intelligence at tho Air Ministry, was presented by Lady Salmond, wife of Air Chief Marshal Sir John Salmond, Chief of tho Air Staff. Slio says sho was privately informed that the presentation was being cancelled, but does not know the reason for it. Captain and Mrs. Courtney have gono to the country. There have been precedents in tho last two reigns for tho cancellation of a Court presentation after it has actually taken place, but it is very unusual and a rare occurrence.

C 'ourtney, a well-known editor and publicist, 110 joined tho Britannia at Dartmouth as a naval cadet in 1905, and was a lieutenant in tho Navy, 110 joined; tho Royal Naval Air Service in 1912, and was squadron-commander in 1914. In the war ho was mentioned in despatches and was awarded tho D.S.O. and tho French Legion of Honour. From 1925 to 1929 he was on tho staff of tho Royal Air Force Staff College at Andover. 110 married in 1926 Miss Constance Rayson Grcensill.
