[BY TEI.EOTIArrr.—OWN coruespokdknt.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Tho origin of Tuscan wheat, which is ono of tho sorts most favoured by Canterbury growers and millers, has been something of a mystery. A probable solution of the mystery was given to the .executive of tho Wheat Research Institute by tho director, Dr. F. W. Ililgendorf, who stated that it was probablo that it had come from Portugal. In his report Dr. Ililgendorf stated that tho collection of foreign wheats,, numbering about 1100, had proved of interest, in that somo of the wheats from Portugal displayed close affinity wij.h New Zealand solid straw Tuscan. From tho commonness of macaroni wheats in tho Mediterranean, and from certain features of Tuscan, it was just possible that the New Zealand wheat was descended from a cross between a bread wheat and a macaroni wheat, and that other crosses of tbo same nature, but better quality, might exist in tho same area. Further importations from Portugal would bo made Dr. Ililgendorf added to-day that last season ICO samples of wheat had been obtained from Spain and Portugal, and quite a number of these gave evidence of Tuscan. There wero two kinds of wheat. One, the macaroni kind, was grown along tho Mediterranean. This wheat had too much protein to permit bread to bo made, and could only be used for making macaroni. Tho other kind of wheat was used for making bread. Tho probability was that solid straw Tuscan was a cross of these two kinds of wheat, for tho two kinds wero only grown in Spain and Portugal. In other countries only ono kind or tho other of wheat was grown. This theory probably accounted for the difficulty which had been experienced in crossing solid straw Tuscan. Ho thought that this investigation was a hopeful piece of work. CHICAGO WHEAT MARKET. CHICAGO, June 19 .Wheat.—July. 96 5-8 cents a bushel; September, 99 3-8 cents j December, 1 dollar 4 cwits.
