[BY TELEGRAPH—OWN COIIItEfirONPENT.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday.

Following tho appeal by the Prime Minister, tho Hon. G. W. Forbes, for increased assistance from local bodies in solving tho unemployment problem Mr. .J. A. C. A Hum, chairman of tho Auckland Transport Board waited upon Mr. Forbos to-day in order to discuss tho goneral unemployment question with him, and to explain what works his board was prepared to carry out in tho future Mr. Allum stated this evening that tho Auckland Transport Board had no intention whatever of raising loans to relievo unemployment. Ho had waited upon the Prime Minister with tho solo object of making tho board's position clear on certain proposals which it had in hand, and of inquiring from tho Prime Minister whether tho. Government's offer of assistance covered these works.

An appeal had been made for the assistance of local bodies, and it was his dosiro to understand fully tho Government's position. '

PROPOSAL AT MOUNT EDEN.

REFUSAL TO GIVE SUBSIDY.

Advice has been received by the Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. E. 11. Potter, that tho Government has refused to subsidise certain work in the borough on which tho council hoped to engage unemployed men. Tho letter; which way received from tho Public Works Oflico in Wellington, states: "It is a general instruction, that .works being subsidised bv tho Government for relief of unemployment shall be of a capital nature: As the conditions do not appear to be waived by tho Prime Minister in this case wo are unable to upprovo of tho proposed work as relief work."

Mr. Potter said yesterday that the council had gone out of its way to find money for certain work) such as the resurfacing of footpaths, and since unemployed men were to havo been engaged the subsidy was applied for. What was meant by work of a "capital nature" he did not know, but the Government w%; certainly making it difficult to help the unemployed, lie would ask for further information.
