STATE LOTTERIES.
HOSPITAL BOARDS' UPKEEP.
FARMERS REJECT REMIT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday.
A proposal that tho Government bo asked to conduct State lotteries for the upkeep of hospital and charitable aid boards, was submitted to tho conference of the Farmers' Union yesterday, but after a brief debate it was rejected. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Poison, said he hoped the conference would not do anything which would mako anyone believe they were supporting State lotteries. He could not rule the remit out of order, but it would be unfortunate if they seriously discussed it. It would creato a wrong impression in the minds of tho public. Mr. 0. P. Lynch: I think it is a most extraordinary thing to have the chairman prejudicing a motion on tho order paper before we have heard it. I am prepared to'move the remit. The remit was rejected.
