THE MAUI POMARE.
HULL TO BE REPAIRED.
FAULT IN CONSTRUCTION.
[UY TELEGRAPH. —'-PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, Tuesday
The report in circulation on Saturday that the defects in the machinery of tho Government motor-ship Maui I'omare are such that tho expense involved will make tho repairs a false economy is denied in official quarters.
It was stated yesterday that the trouble is entirely ono of hull construction and that tho engines are not concerned, but that they will havo to bo lifted out to enable tho affected parts to be reached. Certain repairs aro necessary to the interior of the vessel's hull and it is thought advisable at tho same timo to strengthen the engino foundations. It is impossible to do the work required to the hull without lifting tho engines out. The repairs are to bo carried out' at Wellington, but tho vessel will not bo taken out of the water. It is stated officially that there is no question of the present trouble being so serious as to warrant the Maui Pomaro's being removed from tho Cook Islands service.
