ARREST ON STEAMER.
PASSENGER FROM SYDNEY.
REMAND FOR INQUIRIES
Stated by tho police to have been deported from Sydney, where ho had served a prison sentence, George Alexander Low, aged 27, labourer, was arrested by Detective Sergeant McHugh on tho steamer Maunganni when she arrived from Sydney yesterday morning. Later lie appeared in the Police Court on a charge of failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation. It was alleged that tho offence was committed in Wellington 011 February 7. Applying for a remand until next Monday, Chief-Detective Hammond said accused had only just been arrested. He had been deported from Sydney after serving a sentence there. Ho was a prohibited immigrant in Australia as he had landed within two years of a conviction in New Zealand on a criminal charge. A remand was wanted to enable inquiries to bo made in Wellington regarding tho alleged breach of probation. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, granted the remand to' Monday.
