ADELAIDE CUP WINNER.
TRIUMPH FOR J. SCOBIE.:
SIXTH SUCCESS IN RACE.
Temptation, winner of the Adelaide Cup last Wednesday, is owned and trained by tho veteran James Scobie, of Melbourne, who bought him for 100 guineas.
Mr. C. S. McPhillnmy, of Forbes, New South Wales, sent Temptation to Scobio ns a juvenile hoping that the son of Royal Alwyno would develop into a Derby hero. Scobie found the horso to be bo slow that ho could not " head a bullock," as the saying goes. After persevering with Temptation for six or eight months, he reported tho condition of affairs to Mr. McPhillamy, and received instructions to send the horse tip for hale. Desirous of doing his best for the owner, Scobio mado an opening bid of 100 guineas. No ono made an advance on the offer.
Temptation now is rising five. Before going to Melbourne ho won 5 few small races,- the initial success 'being registered at Geelong. But it was a far cry from a Novice Handicap to the Adelaide Cup. Scobio began to realise tho horse's possibilities when' ho finished second to Spearlotto in tho Kyneton Cup about two months ago. II o reckoned that Temptation was unlucky to lose on that occasion. Rosbercon, who had to bo content with third honours, won tho Albury Cup recently, thus adding to the merit of Temptation's Kyneton display. Before leaving for South Australia, Scobio wrote to Mr McPhillamy stating that Temptation had made marked improvement, and might land cither the Adelaide Cup or A.R.C. Birthday Cup. Temptation, who was ridden by Scobio's apprentice Evans, registered a sterling performance by leading all tho way, at ono stage having an advantage of six lengths. Nadean ran up to Temptation about the half-mile. Tho two horses provided a thrilling struggle all tho way do\yn the straight and 100 yds. from the post they wero joined by Kirrkio. Temptation always had a little the better of matters, however, and won by u short head, with Kirrkio a neck away third. Kirrkio was unlucky, as a furlong from homo his rider, Percivul, tried to go between tho leaders, but there was insufficient room, and ho was forced to tho outside.
During tho thirty years that Scobio luib been visiting Adelaide as a trainer he has trained winners of most .of tho important races. Paul Pry, owned by tho late Sir Rupert Clarke, was his first important winner. In 1898 and the two following years Paul Pry carried all beforo him in Adelaide, and was Scobio's first Adelaide Cup winner. In the intervening years Eyo Glass (twice), Green Cap and King Ingoda won that rade. Temptation was his sixth winner.
