FINANCIAL ESTIMATES.
RATES STRUCK FOR THE YEAR. Jho Papatoetoo Town Board met on Tuesday evening, (lie chairman, Mr. T. li. Smytheman, presiding. Mr. \\. ,J. Nicholson, convener of tho 1 inanco -Committee, submitted the financial estimates for tho year. The rates wore struck at in tho pound on un* impi oved valuation, this being tlio same rato as last year. The principal items of revenue are:—Jlat.es, £8966; heavy traffic licences, £250; drivers' licences, £l2O. In an estimated expenditure of £12,613, tho main items are:—lnterest ori water loans, £1045; sinking funds and other interest charges, £1896; Hospital Board levy, £956 (an increase on the year of street lighting. £400; administration, £1415; wages, £1250; materials fur works, £2250.' Ihe Welfare League requested tho board to support ;i petition praying for an amendment ol tho .-Vet governing election of power board members. Jt was stated (hat under the present system the city vote swamped the rural districts in representation. It was considered that a ward system should be introduced. The board agreed to circularise nil local bodies eoncoined with ,i, view to pressing for an amendment of the Act. Tho purchase of ;i propertv in f?t. George htreet for conversion into municipal chambers and Phinket rooms was advocated by the Welfare League. The board felt the time was not. opportune for consideration of this question and agreed to submit it to the ratepayers' meeting in September.
