SECONDARY INDUSTRIES.

ASSOCIATION'S PROGRESS,

AUCKLAND MANUFACTURES.

"Tho increased activities of the association are bearing fruit and the greater interest displayed by the general public is proof that tho value of our manufacturing industries is at last becoming more fully recognised," states the annual report of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association, which is 'to be presented at tho annual meeting on May 28. Reference is made in the report to the farewell message of Sir Charles Fergus- , son, a message which was of particular interest to every member of the community; If his valuable advice was followed there was every likelihood that the serious problem of unemployment would be practically eliminated, that openings for tho girls and boys leaving school would bo' provided and that prosperity would return to the Dominion. One of the most important matters that had occupied tho attention of tho committee had been the suggested setting-up of a Development of Industries Board. Representations had been made to tho Cabinet on several occasions and the action of tho Government in appointing a Parliamentary Industries Committee to inquire into and report ori several industries might bo regarded as a first step in tho required direction. Unfortunately, owing to the change of Minister of Industries and Commerce and to the resignation of one member tho committee had not yet functioned, but it was hoped that . the matter would be arranged at an early date. Mainly ias the result of a membership drive initiated during the year, 95 new members were added to the toll and tho total membership now stood at 276. The balance-sheet showed that tho association was in a healthy financial position. Tho receipts from the Winter Exhibition were the same as last year and the members' subscriptions increased by £BO. The total receipts, including the balance from tho previous year., amounted to £4044 and the expenditure was £3535, leaving a balance of £509. Of this amount, £SOO was invested in debentures, tho fund now amounting to £SOOO.
