CYCLE ROAD RACING.

OPINION OF BUS COMPANY.

PROTEST BY MOTORISTS

The opinion that somo definite action is necessary in connection with the use of main public roads as cycle race-tracks was expressed in a letter received from the Passenger Transport Company at a meeting of the council of the -Auckland -Automobile Association last evening. The letter stated that the question leads u]) to that of the general control of cyclists on public highways and that it would appear that cycles may be used without regard to their being equipped with bells or brakes. The company suggested that tho association, representing a great number of motorists in the Auckland Province, would perhaps sec fit to move 111 tho direction of having somo control placed both upon the bicycle on public highways and upon tho use of the roads as racing tracks. The company enclosed a copy of a letter recently sent to the Manukau County Council and drew attention to the danger, involving both cyclists themselves and possibly the passengers in the buses. The letter stated that drivers were complaining that racing cyclists approached buses without any warning and often bunched together. In avoiding collisions with them the bn;ies wero liable to leave the road or collide with other vehicles. The letter concluded with a suggestion that in the interests of the cyclists themselves and road users in general the use of main highways as race tracks should not be allowed. Members pointed out that tho racing clubs havo already been warned by the traffic inspector of tho Mnnukau County Council that if they hold meetings without the authority of the council they will be liable to prosoeution. It was decided to protest to the Manuka 11 County Council against any future racing being allowed 011 roads under its control.
