CONDITION OF MAIN ROADS.

PROPOSED RATES FOR YEAR

The "Witikato County Council met today, the chairman, Mr. T. Hinton, presiding.

The engineer reported that the Great South Road main highway had been well maintained during tho month, and, with the exception of several short lengths, the surface was in good order. The Hamil-ton-Paeroa highway was also in good order, except in a few places where new metal was required. It had been found difficult to maintain the Ilamilton-Rotorua Road owing to the heavy traffic. The. metalling of the filling on Nikan Swamp, on the Ohinewai-Tahuna main highway,-was being carried out, stated the report, and when completed the road would be in good order right through. A new bridge was required over tho Mangatea'Stream at Te Hoe, and* an application would be made. for a 'subsidy for this work on next year's estimates. Notice of motion was given to strike the rates for the ensuing year. Following are the proposed rates for tho various ridings, the present rates being given in parentheses :— Whangamarino, lJ>d (lid); Huntly, lgd (1.U1): Taupiri, 1 3-8 d (lid); liototuna, .l ; |d (lid); Rnakura, 1 l-8d T',d), Taniahere, I>l (ljd); Cambridge, Id (7-8 d). In reply to representations, the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E, A. Ransom, advised that a grant of £3OO on a pound for pound basis for clearing the iMangaorma Stream of obstructions had been made available. The Minister considered it advisable that the Eureka, Hautapu and FeneoUrt Drainago Boards, :n order to protect their drainago systems, should have control of the full length of the stream.

Tho chairman was appointed to represent the council at the.New Zealand Counties' Association Conference in July. •Mr. J.,Primroso was appointed assessor to hear objections to district valuations during the next three years.
