TRADE OF BRITAIN. RETURNS FOR APRIL. DECREASES ALL ROUND. LONDON. May 12. The overseas trado returns for April are the worst for several years. The value of imports was £83,992,000, which is £9,498,000 less than in March, and £20,206,000 less than in April last year. The value of exports was £46,861,000, which is £7,084,000 less than in March, and £13,382,000 less than in April last year. Tho principal decreases compared with April, 1929, were:— Imports: Grain and flour, £3,186,000; food and drink, non-dutiable, £2,363,000, dutiable, £1,055,000; raw cotton, £3.109,000; raw wool, £4,602,000; oil seeds, £1,077,000. Exports: Iron and steel manufactures, £1,023,000; cotton yarns and manufactures, £4,248,000. Re-exports: Raw wool, £1,140,000. Following is a comparison pf the returns for tho first four months of this year and last year:—■ 1929 1930. The advances in tlic prices of copper were the most spectacular movements recorded for a long time. Tho rises ranged from 30s a ton to £4 7s 6d. Tho latter was for standard copper for forward delivery. WANGANUI APPLES. EXPORTS FOR FIRST TIME. For the first time in its history Wanganui is this year exporting apples, all from orchards on the Wanganui River. About 2500 cases of apples from three liver orchards are being sent away. Some are going to Germany, some, to Belgium, and others to Great Britain and South America. Tho orchards arc about 10 miles up tho river, and tho fruit is taken down by tho river steamers to Wanganui and sent by rail to Wellington. So far, 500 cases liavo been despatched. The industry is a new ono for.Wanganui, and already several other river orchardists have signified the'r intention of exporting next season. Tho chief varieties are Dunns, Delicious, Jonathans and Granny Smith. BRADFORD TOPS. LONDON, May 12. Bradford is awaiting the opening of tho London wool sales with confidence. Prices of tops are firm. STRIKE AFFECTS FUTURE. (Received May 13. 7.45 p.m.) Times Cable. LONDON, May 13. Tho strike at Bradford is endangering next season's trade, owing to the inability of manufacturers to produce patterns. Tho fact that foreigners arc availing themselves of the opportunity to capture business is regarded as a reason for their activity in tho Australian and other wool markets, with tho result that tops for forward delivery are quoted approximately at the following prices:—Sixty-four's, warp, 29>,d, average 28jd; fifties, 22J,d; forty-sixes,* 18d; forties, 15.U1.
