CHOPIN'S SURPRISE.

DAVIDSON HANDICAP RACE.

THE SWELL NARROWLY BEATEN

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAWERA, Saturday. An outsider in Chopin effected a surprise in the Davidson Handicap, for which Silvormine wag n hot favourito over Rnanui. Just So begnn smartly and went out to make the running from Yoma, The Swell and Silvormine. The field bunched up about three furlongs from home, and the order into the straight was .Tust So, The Swell. Runnui, Chopin and Silvormine. The Swell was in charge at the distance, but Chopin finished well to beat him by a nock Mountain Heath, fini. j hing on. was two lengths back, third, and Just So fourth. Then in a bunch were Runnui. Yoma. Manly sine] Silvermino.

Silvormino was not altogether fortunate in the running, nlthough he was always fairly handy to tin; leaders, Chopin was well ridden by S. Gerrand, an apprentice who is showing plenty of promise.

ROYAL ACRE'S HURDLES.

IMPROVEMENT ON FIRST DAY,

Ihe class that contested the Manawapou Hurdles was not good, and Glenstar wa3 made a good favourito over Royal Aero. Air l" oree, Gienstar and Whisogne wero in close company over the first three hurdles, when Glenstar was steadied. Five furlongs from home the field bunched up, and Royal Aero assumed command to lead into the straight from Whisogne. Royal Acre stayed on in the rub home to beat Glenstar by a length. Air I'orce being- four lengths away third. Whisogne was fourth, followed by Whenuanui and Vivo. Royal Acre improved upon his effort on the first day, and won nicely from Glenstar. whose jumping was considerably bettor than on Thursday. F. Foster was not seeu to his usual advantage oil Glenstar. '

STEEPLECHASE CONTEST.

FAVOURITE FAILS BADLY.

The Adamaon Steeplechase was productive of a good race, and victory went' to Aurora Boreiilis, who finished well to win nicely from Diana's Lad. Airtight 'was singled out for most attention and he wan a solid favourite over Aurora Boreaiis and Waitaunaha, who wero eaual second favourites.

Airtight. Maidos. Waitaunaha and Diana's Lad wero prominent in the early running. Maidos falling at the third fence. Maunga fell at the sixth fence, and at this stage Aurora Borealis began to move after the leaders. Three fences from home Airtight was just leading Diana's Lad and Aurora Borealia, with Waitaunaha falling back. Aurora Borealis took charge at the second to last fence and went on to win by two lengths from Diana's Lad. who defeated Airtight by sis lengtha. Waitaunaha was a moderate fourth, with Democratic and Brigadier Bill a long way back. The winner was better handled than on the first day, and stayed on well. Maunga was going very freely when ho unseated hia rider. Airtight had every chance and failed dismally at' the finish. ' '

LADY QUEX WINS WELL,

HOPWOOD SHOWS PROMISE.

Lady Quei. with n. Gray in the saddle, was installed a good favourito over Atholspear for the M'okoia Handicap, and she justified the confidence of her backers by winning in good sty] 6. Kio3k hung nt the' barrier,' otherwise it was a splendid start. Benzora, > Atholspear (who soon drifted), and; To Atiawa were tho first away. To Atiawa and Benzora wero together in tho lead across, tho top, and they were the leaders into the straight from Melissa, Lady Quex, Llanoro and Hopwood Onco in line for homo .Lady Quex challenged, und finishing on well won by a length from Hopwood, who defeated Melissa by a head. Llanoro was

fourth, followed by Te Atiawa. AtholißDcar and Gold Dawn.

Hopwood finished on well and should soon win. Melissa and To Atiawa ran Rood races. Jjlanoro was off the couiso at the turn and did well in tho circumstances to finish so close.

AIT AUCKLAND VICTORY.

VALSTREET'S FIVE FURLONGS,

Tho Auckland-trained Valstrcet scored an easy win in the Shorts Hack Handicap, fivo furlongs, for which he was third choice in tho betting to Blue Paper and Win Acre.. Valstrect gave a. good deal of trouble at tho start and was fortunato to get away well. Win Acre. Bon Eve, Ngawhine, Blue

Paper and Valstrcet wero among the leaders for a couple of furlongs, when Bluo Paper took charge to lead into the straight from Valstrcet, Moatoa and Patearoa. As soon as heads were turned for home Valstreet put in his claim and went on to win by two lengths from Patearoa. Blue Paper was a length away third, and Rule Britannia fourth. I'hon camo Win Acre and Annoyer.

HACK ' FLAT EVENTS.

PAIKO AND LATAKIA SCORE,

For the Ngarnutu Hack Handicap Itovnl Finance waa a pood favourite over Statuary and Palearoa. Gueress and Anbridgo, were badly left, Palearoa and Paiko brine: first out flora Tentcall. Paiko, Gowim Lea, Tentcßll, Patearoa and Royal finance were prominent across tlio top • and they wero tlie leaders ,iiii,o the Htraight. In a good hvee to the post, Pail:o won by a neck from Patearoa. with Royal Finance half a length away third. Tentcall was fourth, followed by Pen Jlur, Gowanlea and Adventus. Royal Finance lied every chance, but Statuary was badly placed early and i« almost sure, to do better soon. Tentcall was. not well ridden and is n likely improver. Paiko, a three-year-old by Chief Iluler, in on the upgrado. Another outsider in Latakia scored in the Borough Hack Handicap, which was a great betting rare, with Goldlike, Merry Melody and Brilliant" Light at the head of the ([notations. Latakia was quickly in the lead to .show the way into the straight two lengths clear of Brilliant Light, Potolcer, Rerriora and Werata. In a good rare to the post Latakia stayed on to win by a head from Werata, with Joy a pear a length away third. Brilliant Light was fourth, followed by Goldlike, Crenna lowr: and Lucretia Gol:!like failed to begin well enough to have a chance, while Merry Melody was soon in trouble lifter hopping out smartly from No. 1 position. Willi 11. Gray in the saddle, Latakia was favourite in the last race on the first day. but on this occasion when ridden by 1. Green ho wan at double-figure odds.

Wood, the otfner and trainer of Chopin, does not rely upon others to transport his horse to meetings nowadays, lie has purchased a motor-float of his own, and Chopin does the meetings in his own private conveyance The trip to llawera was made very profitablo by Chopin s sinpnso victory in the chief flat race, the Davidson Ilandicap, on Saturday.
