A serious conflict occurred between natives and police at Worcester, a viticulf.ural district 60 miles north-east of Capetown.
Five natives were killed, 16 were seriously injured, and many others were slightly hurt. For many weeks the natives and coloured people had threatened to hold a demonstration under tho auspices of the Industrial Workers' Union, which is allied to tho Third (Communist) International. Tho leaders of the natives, in viewf of police precautions, withheld action until yesterday.
The crisis came when the chief detective at Capetown and four policemen motored past. The crowd then stoned tho car.
Nineteen policemen with bayonets fixed were summoned. Two were advancing on tho crowd with tho object of arresting a native for assault when both were stabbed.
Captain Carter, in making a final effort, was knocked down, and his face was cut open with an axe. The police thereupon fired. Constable Walters was seriously stabbed. Another constable's lifo was saved by a pocketbook.
