MEN OF THE FORCES.

CHANGES IN BRITAIN. GREATLY-IMPROVED QUALITIES. (Received May 5, 7.15 p.m.) British Wireless. RUGBY, May 4. "Lord Thomson, Secretary of State for Air, in replying to tho toast of tho Forces of tho Crown at the Royal Academy banquet last evening, said no human being could foresee what the development of armaments would bo. One might be dismayed to think tho machine might outstrip tho human spirit. The soldier, sailor and airman of today were vastly different from the men who joined tho forces 40 years ago. They had a different outlook. Many were highly skilled technicians. They had to bo men capable of controlling their nervous systems under peculiarly appalling conditions. They were not conscripts, nor were they mercenaries. They were citizens who had adopted tho great profession of arms and were prepared and anxious to live up to their high calling. They were waiting with quiet confidence for any trials which might come.
